KEY STAR 900 Swing Gate Motor Kit

The KEY STAR 900 operates at 2.5 cm/s (25 mm/s) rod speed — the fastest rod speed of any swing gate motor in the POWERgate Abu Dhabi range. Most motors, including the FAAC 413, 415, and Genius EURO BAT400, operate at 16 mm/s. The faster rod speed enables the KEY STAR 900 to complete a 90° arc in 18–25 seconds despite a shorter effective stroke, reflecting KEY Automation’s design priority for high-frequency use where faster individual cycles directly increase hourly gate throughput. The faster speed is managed without encoder feedback through the CT20224 board’s travel learning calibration.

The KEY STAR 900 is explicitly listed as without encoder, unlike the KEY RAY FAST which includes one. Position control is managed through the CT20224 control unit’s travel learning function: during commissioning, the board records the motor’s exact run time to reach the open and closed positions, then uses these timed limits on every subsequent cycle. Force-based obstacle detection replaces encoder-based load monitoring. This is a robust and widely proven approach in high-duty linear motors, where the encoder’s additional component is an unnecessary complexity for installations prioritising cycle frequency and long-term mechanical reliability over precision position programming.

Both the KEY STAR 900 and KEY RAY FAST are 24V DC swing gate motors for similar gate sizes (3m vs 3m), but serve different priorities. The STAR 900 delivers 85W, 1400N, 80% duty, 25mm/s speed, no encoder, IP54. The RAY FAST delivers encoder, Night Light System, 10-second 90° cycle, SUB transmitter remote release, UV-resistant covers. The STAR 900 is optimised for high-frequency reliable cycling; the RAY FAST for fast, intelligent, smart-featured operation. Both are priced at AED 2,900 and use KEY Automation’s 433 MHz SUB transmitter ecosystem.

Travel learning is the process by which the CT20224 control unit records the motor’s actual run time to open and close the gate during initial setup. The technician runs the gate through one full cycle while the board measures the exact time taken. These recorded times become the gate’s position limits for all future cycles. For a motor without an encoder, travel learning is the primary commissioning step — incorrect or skipped learning causes the motor to stop too early (gate not fully open or closed) or too late (motor over-travels against the stop on every cycle). Re-learning is required if bracket positions are adjusted.

The KEY STAR 900 carries a 24-month manufacturer warranty. Because the motor has no encoder, the CT20224 travel learning must be completed correctly before handover — over-travel on every cycle causes cumulative mechanical stress on the gate brackets and motor housing that degrades reliability. The 80% duty cycle requires the power supply to sustain continuous operation without voltage sag, as the 3.5A current draw at 24V must be maintained throughout high-frequency cycling.
