The encoder on the CAME AXI20DGS continuously tracks the motor shaft rotation, providing the control panel with real-time gate position and speed data throughout the 15-second cycle. This enables: precise electronic slow-down as the gate approaches its open and closed positions; dynamic obstacle detection by comparing actual motor load against the encoder’s position-based expected load curve; adjustable partial opening to a specific angle (such as pedestrian-width opening) rather than full open only; and consistent gate positioning on every cycle regardless of hinge friction or wind load variation. The AMICO A18230 does not have an encoder because its 230V design uses mechanical limit switches and a fixed-threshold electronic clutch for simpler, cost-effective small-gate control. The encoder on the AXI20DGS reflects CAME’s positioning of the AXI family as a more intelligent 24V residential platform.

EN 12453 is the European safety standard for power-operated pedestrian doorsets covering automatic gates, specifying impact force limits, safety device requirements, and risk assessment procedures for gates used in residential and commercial settings. The CAME AXI20DGS being tested to EN 12453 means CAME has verified that the motor’s force output and safety behaviour comply with this standard under test conditions. This is the only swing gate motor in the POWERgate Abu Dhabi range to explicitly cite this standard. For Abu Dhabi installations where insurance providers, building authorities, or project specifications require documented safety standard compliance for automated gate systems, the AXI20DGS’s EN 12453 certification provides formal documentation that other motors in the range do not explicitly state.

The CAME AXI20DGS draws 5A at 24V, which equals 120W of motor power (P = V × I). This is higher current than most 24V motors in the range because the AXI20DGS is a 120W motor — the BFT KUSTOS BT range and IGEA BT consume only 40W at 24V, drawing approximately 1.7A. The higher 120W power level on the AXI20DGS reflects the motor’s requirement to deliver 400–2000N of adjustable thrust on gates up to 200 kg with a 50% duty cycle, where consistent force output across varying gate conditions requires more motor power than the more efficient 40W BFT motors achieve through different gear designs. The 24V control panel or transformer supplying the AXI20DGS must be rated to deliver at least 5A continuously without voltage drop.

The AXI20DGS opens swing gate leaves to a maximum of 115° from the closed position — 5° less than the ATHOS AC A25’s 120° and 10° less than the IGEA BT’s 125°, but more than the ATHOS AC A25’s 110°. For a 2.0m gate leaf at 115°, the gate opens wide enough for standard vehicle passage in most Abu Dhabi villa driveways. The 115° limit is set by the AXI20DGS’s encoder-based electronic limit system, which can be programmed to any angle up to the 115° maximum — including a reduced pedestrian opening angle of, say, 45° or 60° for foot traffic without a full vehicle-width opening cycle. This partial opening programmability via the encoder is not available on motors using work-time limits or mechanical stops.

The encoder is one of the most sensitive components: encoder wiring damage during installation, incorrect low-voltage cable routing near 230V lines causing interference, or power supply voltage fluctuation below the 24V minimum can produce position errors that cause the gate to stop mid-cycle or reverse unexpectedly. The 5A continuous current draw means the power supply must be correctly rated — an undersized transformer causing voltage sag is a common cause of encoder misreads that appear as motor faults. The IP44 rating requires sheltered installation. The motor’s explicit EN 12453 certification means installation must include correctly functioning safety devices to maintain compliance.
