The SOMFY ELIXO Smart io uses io-homecontrol® radio technology at 868–870 MHz — a completely different protocol from the RTS 433.42 MHz used by the SOMFY ELIXO 800 and ELIXO 2000. io is SOMFY’s bidirectional smart home protocol where the motor confirms each command and reports gate status back to the controller. It integrates natively into Somfy TaHoma smart home systems, allowing the ELIXO Smart io to appear alongside other io-connected devices such as blinds, lights, and alarms in a unified Abu Dhabi smart home setup.

SOMFY explicitly states no gate end stops are required on the rail for the ELIXO Smart io. Traditional sliding gate motors need physical end-stop brackets bolted to the rail to trigger the limit switch at the open and closed positions. The Smart io’s encoder and adjustable soft stop zone determine the stopping position electronically without physical contact. This simplifies Abu Dhabi rail track installations, eliminates end-stop bracket drilling and alignment, and removes a common source of limit position drift over time.

The SOMFY ELIXO Smart io specifies two gate configurations. Rail-mounted gates (guided by a ground rail and top guide) can weigh up to 300 kg with a 6m passage — the rail bears the weight and provides stability. Self-supporting gates (cantilevered, with no ground rail) are limited to 200 kg and 4m passage because the gate leaf must be balanced entirely by the track wheels without ground rail support. This makes the Smart io one of the few motors to officially specify cantilever gate capacity.

The SOMFY ELIXO Smart io’s 9.6V battery pack (part 9001001) provides either 24 hours of standby or 3 complete gate cycles during mains failure — whichever occurs first. Three cycles means 3 full open-and-close sequences from battery only. For Abu Dhabi properties where a power cut overnight needs to allow gate access the next morning, 24 hours of standby confirms the motor remains ready, but only 3 actual movement cycles are available from the compact 9.6V battery pack.

The SOMFY ELIXO Smart io accepts both standard 4-wire photocells and SOMFY 2-wire BUS photocells. BUS photocells share a two-wire bus and communicate digitally with the motor board, reducing cabling compared to 4-wire connections. Slowdown zone and soft stop zone are separately adjustable parameters — slowdown controls where the gate starts decelerating; soft stop controls the final distance of near-zero-speed travel before stopping.
